Brooklyn's Population In 2000, the U.S. decennial census counted Brooklyn's population at 2,465,326 making it New York City's most populous borough. It is also the largest, at 71 square miles. Brooklyn, or King's county, is the most populous county in New York State and the 7th most populous in the United States.1 If considered an independent city, the borough would rank as the fourth largest in the United States after the rest of New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Between 1990 and 2000, Brooklyn's population grew by 7.2%.2
Borough growth continues despite high levels of outmigration because
of large numbers of new immigrants and high birth rates.3
Currently about 30% of all New Yorkers live in Brooklyn.4
