Brooklyn's Population by Race and Ethnicity

Brooklyn is one of most diverse counties in the United States. In 2002, 38% of Brooklyn's residents were reported to be citizens of other countries, and 43% of borough residents spoke a foreign language at home.5

As of 2000, Brooklyn had the third largest African-American population, almost 940,000 people, of all the counties in the United States. Its population grew by 15,000 people between 1997 and 2000. The Hispanic population in Brooklyn numbered almost 488,000 people and is the second largest concentration in New York City. Between 1997 and 2000, the Asian population in Brooklyn has also grown, rising by 61,000 to total 206,000 people, making it the third largest concentration of Asians in New York City.6
