Personal Income in Brooklyn

As of 2000, the areas with the highest household incomes included Flatlands/Canarsie, Brooklyn Heights/Fort Greene, and Park Slope/Carroll Gardens. The lowest incomes were in Bushwick, followed by Bedford Stuyvesant and Brownsville/Ocean Hill.

Average per capita personal income grew slightly between 1996 and 2000, from $22,460 to $24,111, a 7.3% increase over the entire four year period. While this rate of growth is close to the national rate of inflation, it seriously lags the income levels of the city, the metropolitain region, and the country as a whole. The following table shows how per capita incomine in Brooklyn stacks up from a regional and national perspective.

The American Community Survey gives the median income of a Brooklyn household as $35,453 as of 2002. In that year, 23% of households received Social Security. Average income from Social Security was $11,130.11
