44% of Brooklyn's employed population, or 410,000 people, work in the borough. Not surprisingly, most establishments in Brooklyn are small. As of 2000, 91% of the approximately 38,704 establishments had fewer than 20 employees.12 The establishments in the 20-to-99 employee range are primarily in trade, services, and manufacturing.13 There are over 100,000 individuals who file Schedule C tax returns, indicating that they are the sole proprietors of their businesses.14
