Basic Electronics for Women

NYC College of Technology
February 2007 - June 2007: Wednesday and Friday 6:00PM – 9:00 PM

$850. Fee Waiver for women who qualify. A technical course with classroom and lab sessions that teaches skills and theory applicable to entry-level employment as an electronics technician. Hands-on activities help students acquire vocational skills needed to install, troubleshoot and maintain office equipment, cable television systems, industrial equipment, and electronics communication equipment such as cellular phones, pagers, microwaves and AM/FM broadcasting equipment. Topics include: 1) introduction to electricity, 2) voltage, current and resistance, 3) series and parallel circuits, 4) capacitors and inductors, 5) transformers and power supplies, and 6) related mathematics.

The course is offered as a gender equity initiative in response to low employment rate for women as electronics technicians.

Building Maintenance & Environmental Services (For Women and Men)

NYC College of Technology
March 2007 - June 2007: Saturday 9:00AM – 5:00 PM

$1,250. Payable in three installemtns. An intensive hands-on course provides entry-level preparation in building maintenance and repair for handyman and maintenance works. The course is taught in a well-equipped construction technology lab at the college and provides real work projects in multi-unit building maintenance. Topics include: 1) plaster and sheetrock walls – wood and steel framing, taping, and joint compounding, basic repairs and building codes; 2) common plumbing problems; 3) electronically circuitry – switches, receptacles, fuses, circuit breakers and lightning; 4) doors – installing and servicing hinges and locks, and weatherizing 5) ceramic tiling, 6) woodwork refinishing, and 7) blueprint reading. A certificate is awarded on completion of the course.
